Tackling the Ghastly Teacher Attrition Crisis: Who Comes to the Rescue?

scary trends Oct 11, 2023

For the month of October, you will notice that my blogs will be a bit different than previous blogs and follow the "Scary Trends" in education topic.  This will be a fun way to "break the script" and cover some pretty scary, but relevant topics that affect us all as educators. Today, we're diving headfirst into a topic that has been haunting the hallways of schools across the nation - the ghastly teacher attrition crisis. But don't worry; it's not all gloom and doom... or is it?

The Spooky Situation

Picture this: You're in your high school math class, desperately trying to decipher the mysteries of algebra. But there's a twist. Your teacher is new this year, and she's already handed in her resignation letter. Yep, you heard it right - another teacher gone, leaving you and your classmates in the lurch.

The teacher attrition crisis is not just a local ghost story; it's a national nightmare. In recent years, the United States has been grappling with a teacher shortage crisis that's making students and educators alike scream in frustration.

The Current State of Education

So, what's the deal with the current state of education? Well, it's a bit of a roller coaster ride. On one hand, we've seen some incredible innovations in teaching methods and technology. On the other hand, we've got classrooms bursting at the seams, underfunded schools, and, of course, the ever-elusive search for quality educators.

Teacher attrition, or the rate at which teachers leave the profession, is one of the biggest challenges we face. A study by the Learning Policy Institute estimates that around 8% of teachers leave the profession every year. That's a whole lot of talent walking out the door.  Who can help us with this problem?

🎵🎵"The Final Count Down" Begins Playing... Enter the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

Now, let's get to the hero of our story - the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). This organization is like the Ghostbusters of the education world, fighting the specter of teacher attrition with rigor and determination. Their mission is to advance the quality of teaching and learning by maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.

How NBPTS is Combatting the Crisis

  1. Setting the Gold Standard: NBPTS offers a rigorous certification process for teachers. Achieving National Board Certification is like earning a gold medal in the teaching Olympics. It's a way to recognize and reward teachers who demonstrate excellence in their profession.

  2. Professional Development: The NBPTS doesn't stop at certification. They also provide ongoing support and professional development opportunities to help teachers stay engaged, motivated, and effective in the classroom. It's like having a mentor who's always there to lend a hand.

  3. Advocacy: The NBPTS isn't just working in the shadows. They're actively advocating for policies that support teachers and students. They're fighting for better working conditions, fair compensation, and adequate resources for schools. It's all about creating an environment where teachers can thrive.

Most of the work that I focus on in coaching and helping teachers comes from these three areas when it comes to my Component 3 and Component 4 Programs for initial candidates and MOC Renew Like a Pro for candidates who are renewing. (*More information below)

The Brighter Future

While the teacher attrition crisis may be giving us the chills, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is leading the way towards a brighter future for education. By recognizing and supporting accomplished teachers, advocating for positive change, and championing the profession, they're helping to stem the tide of teachers leaving the profession. Teachers deserve the same level of professionalism as other industries.

So, the next time you hear a tale of a teacher who vanished into thin air, remember that there are organizations like NBPTS out there, working tirelessly to ensure that our classrooms are filled with skilled, dedicated, and motivated educators. It might just be the happy ending we've all been waiting for in the spooky saga of teacher attrition.
